Psalm 1

Two Trees: Psalm 1

Psalm 1 is the doorway into the Psalter. It paints two pictures and asks the reader which he will be. On one side, a man whose feet do not walk in ungodly counsel, whose seat is not in the scornful, whose delight is in the law of the LORD — and who is therefore like a tree planted by the rivers of water, whose leaf does not wither. On the other, the ungodly: not so, but like the chaff which the wind drives away. The LORD knows the way of the righteous. The way of the ungodly shall perish. Before any psalm of praise or lament, the Psalter sets you at this fork in the road.
